GORDITAS

Gorditas are a Mexican food, fat little tortillas stuffed with various fillings.  It means “little fat ones”.  Here a group of ample women are sharing a good giggle at an outdoor table in the gorgeous nighttime of their colonial town.

THE POTTER, VICTOR PARRAS

This man lived down the street from the artist  in Guanajuato, where he and his sons throw hundreds of pots  a day on home made equipment.

DESERT MARIMBA MORNING

The artist suggests that the transparent wall could be the boundary between the conscious and the unconscious, a transparent barrier with a door.  It is obviously dawn, the long shadows of early morning reach across miles of desert.  Someone is leaving for a long journey into the unknown.  Inside the door is music and the laughter of an abundant, happy woman sitting on a bench the color of blood, of life.

THE DEVIL COMING HOME FROM A NIGHT OUT

The smoke in the background confirms that he has been up to no good. He steps out of his customized 1951 Ford Victoria with his cloven hoof and cashmere coat, tipping his hat and making an offer you had better not accept.


CHEWY, KING OF THE MARIACHIS

Chewy and his group, called Reyes de los Mariachis, was the artist’s neighbor in Guanajuato. Note the authentic dress they wear, as do many of the street performers in Guanajuato.
THE DANCER AND THE TORTISE

Dancers are a common theme in the artist’s work.  They are always near water, and represent the dance of the cosmos, of life, of atoms.

LA MORENA

The face of a street vendor in Guanajuato, with the wonderful genuine smile you see on so many Mexican faces. Behind her you see the brilliant light of the central Mexican plateau breaking up into crystals as if looking at things through cut glass.

THE WATER CARRIERS

On some of the narrow winding streets of the city there are elaborately carved water spigots at which the neighborhood draws water for household use. They also serve as gathering places for gossip and selling tamales.

THE PRESENT PAST

The past is always present in Mexico. It is a living cultural force guiding the thoughts and actions of everyone from the president to the peasant with deeply imbedded mystical traditions.  The painting brings the past and the present to the same campfire. William Faulkner said:  “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

LA VALENCIANA

La Valenciana church is famous for the opulence of its gold-leaf altar screen.  The wealth displayed in these walls can be traced to the mines of Guanajuato which, on the backs of Indian slaves, yielded enough silver to alter the course of the world’s economy.

THE TIGER’S BRIDE AND BLUE BUTTERFLIES

The tiger and his bride are a common theme for the artist.  The wild spirit and powerful heart of nature is united with the nubile grace of a woman draped in lace.

THE DEVIL DRESSED AS A CHARRO

Legend has it that he Devil dresses up as a Charro and dances at night on a certain hill near Guanajuato. Locals suggest it’s not a good idea to go out walking there after dark.

THE PRIESTESS

From the Tarot card. She is the Shekinah, The White Goddess. The Law is written on the scroll glowing in her lap, which is partially hidden by her robe as she is the guardian of secrets.  In Tarot she represents intuition, clairvoyance and psychic power. She is a sorceress. She can see, into the ocean of the collective unconscious behind her.

KARINA

Karina Serrano Villegas works at a bank in Guanajuato.  The background is an evolution of transparent wallpaper, and has become like a stained glass window looking out into the landscape of her thoughts.

NOPAL AND PINK HOUSE

The giant prickly pear, or nopal, is everywhere in Mexico. It’s even on the flag.  This one grew outside the artist’s window, beside her neighbor’s pink house.

NOPAL AND LA BUFA

The omnipresent Mexican giant prickly pear, and in the background a landscape resonate with the loneliness of the Mexican desert.  The mountain is La Bufa, which towers above Guanajuato.

Here the dimensions interpenetrate.  Architecture morphs into jungle, a suspended window suspended opens in the natural world.

MAYAN CEMETARY

An imagined scene in Maya country, on the night of Day of the Dead, when families come to the graves of their deceased and bring offerings, and build fires in the traditional markers – painted the color of sacred things, blue, the color of Tlaloc the god of rain.

MATACHINE GRAVE

Matachines  are a religious tradition familiar throughout Latin cultures. The person buried here was a participant in the Matachines dance, the only traditional New Mexican dance celebrated in both Pueblo and Hispanic villages.  The white cross-like objects are carried by the dancers.
